FinNet :. Domain Name Register offers the same service as the domain registration service (DNS) in the Internet world except the domains under control are for FinNet only.

The FinNet DNS servers function as the "root" server as well as the "SOA" servers for the registered domain "FinNet-HK.net". Each permanently connected customer is assigned a domain under "FinNet-HK.net".

For service providers or companies with user base greater than 10 can opt to create a sub-domain under FinNet (e.g. Hong Kong Exchange and Clearing Limited has a sub-domain as "hkex.finnet-hk.net" under FinNet).

These sub-domains can either be served by customer-own servers or by FinNet DNS servers. Customer-own DNS servers must be BINDv4 compatible.

FinNet :. Directory contains contact information (name, organization, email address etc.) of all FinNet members as a "Yellow Pages" like utility for members to locate contact for peer-to-peer communication.

All these records are hosted in the FinNet LDAP based directory servers. They are all LDAP version 3 compatible and support replication and partitioning.

FinNet allows directory entries referral through customer-own servers or by directly from the FinNet directory servers.

The FinNet mail service supports two types of access :

• POP3 access (e.g. Outlook or Netscape Mail) and
• SMTP (Web browser based) - Standard Mode and Secure Mode

Secure email is facilitated through the use of 128 bits SSL encryption.

All standard mailboxes has a storage quota of 10MB and an email retention period of 60 x mandays. You can also contact FinNet to order non-standard mailbox with specific size and retention requirement.

FinNet members can choose to operate their own mail servers on FinNet, The mail servers must support SMTP and be SENDMAILv8 compatible. Implementation of STARTTLS is encouraged.

The FinNet web portal "www.finnet-hk.net" hosts the home pages of FinNet and provide a directory of all services available on FinNet. Customers may choose to put their pages on the portal servers or to operate their own servers.
